It takes more than a dozen people per day while our guests are here in order to make this program happen. It is a wonderful way to serve God by helping His people. The mission field is here. There are not many outreach opportunities where you simply show up a church. These families come right into our door and need someone to be the hands and feet of Christ while they are here. And, you can bring your whole family as a service time together.
We never put you out there to serve without being right beside you. We have a list of guidelines that make each job easy to accomplish and one of us are always on call in case questions come up during the week.
Our families are not the typical homeless person you see on the street corner....it may be a mom and dad whose home was burned to the ground, they have no family in the area and they want their children to stay in school while they get settled in a new place. We have had this situation along with many others where hard times took their toll and parents are trying to get on their feet while keeping the family together. This is the only shelter type situation that allows the entire family to stay together.
This is a brief description of the roles available. Again, please ask any questions. You may even want to come and visit during the week while our guests are here.
SET UP & TEAR DOWN
Set up usually occurs on the day the families are due to arrive. We meet right after the second service to unload the truck, make beds, set up the TV room and pray! It takes us less than one hour but is so important. TEAR DOWN happens at 7:30 a.m. the day the families are leaving. We take down beds, load the truck, run the vacuum and get rooms ready for Sunday School. We are done and having coffee by 8:45!
DECK SPOOKS
These are the people who stop by the church during the day while the families are at the Day Center. You may come while someone is in the office: 10 am - 2 pm. This is some general housework: Empty small garbage cans, tidy bathrooms if needed, check the kitchen and tidy the TV room.
DINNER COOKS
Dinner is served between 5:30 and 6:00 pm. Before the week begins, you would receive a call with the number of people and any food allergies. This can be a home-cooked meal, a bucket of chicken or possibly a pizza night! You can prepare it at home and bring it ready to serve or come a bit early and cook at church. This is a very special time for the families.
EVENING HOSTS
5:30 - 8:30 pm - You are invited to eat dinner with the families and hang out for the evening. There is no pressure to this job plus you get some delicious meals. We have games and movies or you can bring a craft if you feel led. Or...you can just be here to be a friend. There must always be 2 hosts present at a time; preferably one
woman and one man. This can be a group: small group, scouts or a youth group. This is the time to make sure the families have packed their lunch for the next day. You can leave when the overnight hosts arrive at 8:30 pm.
OVERNIGHT HOSTS
This job requires one guy and one gal. We have two separate host rooms so this does not have to be a married couple. Sometimes the families are in bed when you arrive. Your job is to turn lights out for the night and wake families in the morning for breakfast. You will also unlock the door for the person preparing breakfast.
If you have to leave for work, you can go when the breakfast people or van driver arrives.
BREAKFAST SERVER
Breakfast supplies are already at the church or you can prepare something if you would like. You need to arrive at the church by 6:00 am. The families may not always eat breakfast but will usually join you for a cup of coffee. You
set out the breakfast supplies and clean up when the families leave with the van driver. You would be the one to make sure all the lights are off when you leave. Also, remind families to take their lunches.
MORNING VAN DRIVER
The guests need to be at the Day Center by 6:45 am so the children can get to school on time. We provide directions for you. You drive the families to the Day Center and also drop off our daily log book.
EVENING VAN DRIVER
The familes get picked up from the Day Center at 5:00 pm each day and brought back to the church where they will have dinner and settle in for the night.
